I HAVE NO SUCH DESIRES. on the outer rim of the galaxy there is a planet. once upon a time, when it had first been discovered, it had had a heroic sounding name — something epic, plucked from the passages of homer or hesiod, something intrepid in keeping with the colonizing spirit. it took three and a half generations to terraform but by the time the planet was habitable, that particular initiative had come and gone, replaced by a new intergalactic regime. instead of a settlement, the planet became a prison, set to house and contain individuals considered to be 'threats' to their home systems, combining both the very worst and the very least criminals from all over the galaxy. the entirety of planet — now simply known as DB7-5 — serves as the institution, its keys held by the wardens who orbit in low atmosphere on a ship known as the argo. bored and abandoned by the same powers that sentenced their charges to imprisonment, the keepers pass the time in their floating technological sandbox while the planet mostly governs itself below.
